Operations Manager


Manage all day-to-day activities in Sheet Machine, Converting, Warehousing and Engineering departments (Barnoldswick and two external sites within 30 miles).


Maximising quality, productivity and efficiency and focus on customer delivery and quality requirements. Utilise best practice techniques.


Create an ongoing process to review and monitor methods to improve quality and efficiencies, including Lean Manufacturing & Best Practice techniques.


Monthly reporting and budget development.


Monitoring to ensure compliance with Environmental requirements including reporting on compliance.


Managing Health Safety and welfare of employees to create and manage a safe working environment.




  • Manage and implement changes to ensure continuous improvement.
  • Responsible for Mill Capital Projects – specifying, planning, obtaining prices, contract review, ordering, installation, commissioning and implementing on budget and on time.
  • Ensure that all personnel are properly trained and aware of potential safety and / or health risks.
  • Recommend and implement measures to improve maintenance methods (including planned preventative maintenance), equipment performance, and quality of product.
  • Work with suppliers to ensure availability of services commensurate with minimal service interruptions.
  • Study production schedules and estimate maintenance worker hour requirements for completion of job assignments.
  • Ensure that all outside contractors comply with company policies and procedures. Confer with other managers to coordinate activities of individual departments/personnel.
  • Tight cost control against budgetary requirements, including negotiating prices / terms and conditions with suppliers.
  • Producing departmental reports (monthly, annual – budgets).
  • Publishing monthly reports, and data of the production departments including production and efficiency figures to allow visibility of all data and discussion at daily/weekly/monthly meetings.
  • Operating and overseeing the Production Equipment to facilitate the needs of the business and its requirements, to allow finished goods to be delivered to good quality standards in a timely manner as required.
  • Order and control stocks of consumables for production and warehousing departments.
  • Control efficient planning of Sheet Machine, converting workstations, and warehousing (internal and external) as well as labour to suit the day-to- day needs of the business and deliver to customer quality and delivery expectations.
  • Ensure Converting schedules are followed and advise Planning of any necessary adjustments that are required.
  • Identify and Manage KPIs on Health and Safety, output, delivery and quality and strive to improve continuously, including implementation of Lean Techniques (lean roadmap and 4Ps as examples). Run SQDCP and customer services morning meetings.
  • Ensure reliable, co-operative and factual communication with our customers, suppliers, colleagues and the Group.
  • Liaise with Customer Services and Sales as and when required to facilitate all business requirements.
  • Identify any improvements / best practice techniques that can be used to improve overall workflow, equipment performance, efficiencies and quality of product.
  • Define and analyse production / engineering problems. Investigate root causes and recommend /instigate appropriate corrective action.
  • Tight cost control against budgetary requirements, including negotiating prices / terms and conditions with suppliers.
  • Optimise the loading of all vehicles safely and in accordance with all relevant legislation.
  • Setting up an external Lentic Operation in 2024.




  • Bachelor’s Degree in management, engineering, paper science or related field. Equivalent training and/or experience may be considered.
  • Experience with papermaking
