Purpose of Job:

With direction from the Operations Manager, the position is a key member of the paper mills leadership team, providing insight, perspectives, and overall leadership to advance our performance agenda.

The successful candidate will be responsible for implementing and maintaining best manufacturing practices across a production facility with multiple areas. Accountable for safety, quality, productivity, cost performance and people development of the paper machine operatives across 5 rotating shifts.

The production manager will track and create production schedule plans according to customer needs, specifications, and budgetary requirements. You will also monitor critical KPI’s measuring the paper machines performance across all areas and implement appropriate corrective measures to address deficiencies utilising continuous improvement techniques and best manufacturing practices.



Key Activities / Measurables




  • Ensure the safety of all employees; Comply with all local environmental and safety regulations, ensuring employees complete required quality checks and audits of their workplace.
  • Perform all elements of supervision over direct reports, providing leadership and development, performance reviewing, recruitment and maintain employee relations.
  • Meet or exceed plant productivity, cost, or other performance metric expectations as outlined by Operations manager.
  • Collaborate with Operations team to optimise the process to reduce cost, reduce variability, and improve reliability
  • Provide technical and process insights to operations, exploring technology advancements for both processes and products.
  • Participate in, and lead (as appropriate) trial developments and executions.
  • Analise the process operations to ensure all are operating to their full potential with minimal variance.
  • Drive a program of Continuous Improvement in all areas of the production process, using relevant methodologies, to improve efficiencies whilst ensuring high quality products are consistently produced and production costs are controlled.
  • Maintain a high standard of housekeeping throughout the production facilities.
  • Support plant union negotiations, as applicable.

Person Specification

Qualifications and Knowledge


  • At least 4 years’ experience within a production leadership role
  • An Engineering understanding and suitable practical knowledge
  • Experience of implementing Continuous Improvement/Lean/5S/6-Sigma
  • Strong IT skills – especially Microsoft Excel, Word and Outlook
  • Knowledge of OEE
  • Experience of following quality guidelines and controls


  • Educated to Degree level.
  • Experience with Oracle.
  • NEBOSH or IOSH Safety Qualification
  • Lean Six Sigma – preferably Green Belt
  • Paper /packaging or similar manufacturing background

  • Experience of working within a strong Health and Safety culture
  • Experience of leading a team.
  • Direct line management experience including leading disciplinary procedures
  • Able to work under own initiative and within a wider team
  • Methodical and analytical, with excellent attention to detail
  • Highly organised
  • Excellent communication skills both written and verbal

  • Experience of leading a team split across multiple units
  • Experience of working within a lean manufacturing environment
  • Completed courses in Leadership and Coaching
